Best Explanation Ever!

For the term “Galtian Overlords”-which I was asked to define today. Now I would assume that anyone who has been around the last few years would understand the reference, but considering the state of decay of America’s educational system and our news outlets ( with a few great exceptions) may be not.

So here is a the term well defined for you:

The letter:

Help — what does “Galtian Overlords” mean? I mean, I get who you’re talking about, but what is the reference to?

Thanks,

Rosalind

Our response (before we’d had any coffee, mind you):

Dear Rosalind,

In the children’s novel, Atlas Shrugged, there is a running refrain among the characters that goes like this:

“Who is John Galt?”

John Galt is, it goes without saying, a superhuman business genius extraordinaire. He also lacks any sense of civic duty, being a man-child narcissist of the first order. Anyway, long story short, ever since Barack Obama was elected president, there have been empty threats from various right-wingers and libertarians — people who think rather too highly of themselves — about “Going Galt.” To wit, dropping out of society and keeping the spoils of their hard-earned labor all to themselves. Many of these people don’t seem to realize that the rest of the country doesn’t give a fuck about their empty threats, and yet the threats have continued. “I’m going Galt, and I’m taking away my productivity, and let’s see if society can survive without me, harrumph!” To which America replies with a shrug. “Go ahead,” says America, “see if I give a flying fuck about you selfish assholes.”

So that takes care of the “Galtian” part. “Overlords” are overlords. “Our Galtian overlords” is, then, something of a joke. We make fun of selfish rich people with visions of grandeur, because we know full well that Ayn Rand and her characters are mostly idolized by disaffected high school students, not anybody who matters (because, you know, most people grow up, their acne clears, and they free themselves from their solipsistic bubbles). That said, there are indeed rich man-children who consider Rand to be a good writer and a deep thinker. Some of them have gotten press attention. Last summer, in the wake of the passage of Obamacare and at the height of the silliness, many outraged fellow citizens were warning that they might “Go Galt,” and that America would be doomed were they to do so. (These people did not, apparently, realize that with an unemployment rate of 10%, there would be plenty of qualified candidates to fill their positions once they’d left — again, the trouble with narcissism.)

“Our Gatian overlords,” then, are the acolytes of Ayn Rand, whose lack of self-awareness and inflated sense of self-importance (thinking that if they alone don’t pay taxes, America is screwed, e.g.) are symptoms of a larger cultural decay and a shirking of civic responsibility. They are the kids on the playground who always hogged the kickball — and moreover they are the kids who went running to the teacher if somebody else deigned to hog it, for even just a moment, because “THAT’S NOT FAIR, I’M BETTER THAN YOU!!!”

They are a scourge. They must be defeated.

All the best,

Tom O’Hare, editor

  1. Isn’t it funny that all those Galtian overlords are democrats? Not just democrats but hard over stalinists who refuse to pay tax? billionaire types who can’t be bothered. Obama appointees who can’t be bothered. Democrat Congressmen who can’t be bothered?
    Who is Galt now?

  2. Profanity and threatening violence are the hallmarks of weak mind. I cannot argue/debate on the merits of an issue(or the lack thereof) so I must resort to bullying, verbal or physical.
A pox on your house sir and that of your progeny and a wish to return to civility and proper decorum. Forlorn as that might be. Huge sigh….

  3. Where, exactly did he threaten violence?

As for non-payment of taxes, that issue is so 2008. I could point out the corporations who pay virtually no tax-and the Koch brothers, now coudn’t I.

Something has to be done to get the attention of these selfish people. The conventional means do not seem to be working. When the teabaggers come to their senses and decided to rejoin the adult world-well maybe then we can talk about bullying.

  4. “Profanity and threatening violence” – there was none of that in the quote at all. Richard, did you in fact read the quote? Calling down a pox on someone’s house is the only threat anywhere here. Maybe you posted this on the wrong blog? Perhaps a Stalinist’s blog?

“Stalinists”? I repeat, Stalinists!. Sorry Curtis but that scores you a big fat Zero on the credibility meter.

  5. It should have been posted to Skippys comment on the previous post..I liked Stalin…he knew how to control a country, just murder and butcher a significant part of your population for no reason and the rest will fall in line.
This is meant as a sarcasm, which should be apparent to all.
Ah, the evil Koch brothers,,,both nearing 100 years old so I am sure that they give a rats petard about paying taxes.

  6. rejoin the adult world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    are you serious???????????
let’s keep spending the money that we don’t have and never will and pretend we’re adults? Just how adult is that?

WTF? You keep insisting that you and your ilk have a right to spend not just mine and my daughters inheritance but that of her children and grandchildren. People like you make my sick. What do they owe now do you think? $104 trillion. I’m raising her in Texas and she’s not going to pay for any of it since it will be long gone before she joins the work force.

  7. It may be of no nevermind here. I used to read Gardner in Korea (I spent over a year there off and on). Life was tough but he lived for his daughter who was about the same age as my daughter. He had some problems with life and the army and some other personal issues. I greatly regret his passing.

  8. I will say this again, slowly for the learning impaired among us. THE DEFICIT IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEM RIGHT NOW. GETTING UNEMPLOYMENT DOWN AND RESTORING REVENUE TO THE BUDGET IS!

No one is spending your daughter’s inheritance or anyone elses-especially when so much money is out there in the economy being mis-spent and supporting growing income inequality.

Secondly the deficit is not 104 trillion.

Third-we could hold the deficit to a constant percentage of GDP by simply repealing the Bush tax cuts. I’ve proven this over and over again. F for comprehension and retention of content on your part. The federal budget deficit is not a problem right now. It’s the exact opposite of a problem, it’s a solution. And the people who want to tell you otherwise are either stupid or evil. Take your pick.

The money is out there. Repeal the Bush Tax cuts, end the wars, make the tweaks needed to fix Social Security and finally beat the shit out of teabaggers for ever making this an issue to begin with.

That’s the best favor anyone can do for your daughter right now.

  9. I was shocked about Gardner’s death as well. I exchanged e-mails with him plenty of times-we never could get together during my trips over to Korea. Something very wrong happened to him when he came back to the states-but I never got the details of what.
