While staying in Bonn, we drove up to Cologne. We visited the famous cathedral located on the West Bank of the Rhine River there:
The cathedral is huge. Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 and took, with interruptions, until 1880 to complete– a period of over 600 years. The cathedral is one of the world’s largest churches and the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe. You get a sense of this when you go inside:
Of course there are loads of stain glass windows:
The bell tower on the right side, as you face the cathedral can be climbed if you wish-for a fee. (Four Euro’s). It has 533 steps to the top. From which you can view up to the top of the spire:
And it gives you a great view of the city of Cologne-or Koln if you prefer:
And on the way down you can see the bells in the tower:
Later when we came back-we stopped in Cologne for the night, and went to the Christmas Market which is in the shadow of the cathedral:
It is worth the climb-and you time to see.
