Lawrence Eagleburger passed away this weekend. He is one of the few professional Foreign Service officers to rise to become Secretary of State.
One of the things that gets lost in the whole stupid debate about the debt ceiling and the federal budget is that there a lot of folks who work hard for this country-who are not necessarily in the military. One of the sad “self taught truths” is that if a person working in government is not wearing a uniform, then he is not competent to do his job. Its a wrong perception -especially since I work at an agency where a lot of the uniformed presence is incompetent ( starting with #1 himself)-but the the lower levels have some really talented people. A lot of these professionals are doing the job for less money than I would care to.
My Canadian Counterpart has taken notice of Mr. Eagleburger’s career-and pointed out to the rest of us, why we should be grateful for his service to our nation. Read it-especially if you are of the Tea Bag persuasion.
