And this year-I’m getting behind the World Cup. Every where else in the world-businesses and life in general comes to a halt while national teams play for nationalism and bragging rights. The US? Er, not so much-we don’t seem to get behind our team the way other nations do. The World Cup will be a never thought or an after thought. It is a shame really-after all its an excuse to go to a pub.
So here is to all the World Cup widows out there:
Not much of a soccer fan, so I will not be interested in this, but I will root for the US team. Funny, how now it seems that for this game it is fine to show nationalism for your home country’t team in the game of soccer, but when Americans show nationalism and pride in their country not becuase of a soccer team (which we admit we suck at) but because of just the way we are, we are made out to be the “bad guys.”
I know there aer unruly people at sporting events, but when was the last time at a Steelers v. Cowboys game that 3 Rivers stadium erupted in “Steeler Hooigan” madness and destroyed a large part of the stadium and the city.
But, I hope that they have a good time and stay away from the streetwalkers in SA.
fingers not working good
Maurice, I was a ref of sorts when the US nationals soccer was played at UAH. Lot of good soccer in Huntsville that year.
I was dropped off 500 yards from my hotel by the shuttle bus from Inchon in Seoul one year because it could not possibly make it through the crowd of Koreans watching world cup soccer and the next day, I left my hotel there to go out to a bar where 500,000 Koreans were happy as hell to see me and shout out. The US team had suffered a Korean goal to even the score down in Taegu. Interesting times.
This is beyond fabulous…and oh so true!!
Made me laugh 🙂
