Far East Cynic

Soul food.

Last Saturday the S.O. and I drove up to Fayatteville Tennessee. What is it about the south and the name Fayatteville? Arkansas has one. North Carolina does, I think South Carolina does too.

Fayatteville has a couple of things that distinguish it. One, its the closest place to buy a Power Ball ticket thanks to Alabama’s arcane lottery laws. Two, its a "real" southern small town, complete with town square. And three, its got this place:

Now we did not start out with the intent to eat there-but when we got to the town we were both starving. And I was intrigued by this particular place that advertised "Slaw Burgers". I convinced the S.O. we should go in.

Its a quaint old place that’s been around since 1923 and used to be a pool hall.  Its still got a "pool hall" kind of feel.

The S.O. nursing her Iced Tea!

They have lots of old time momentos. My favorite was this picture entitled "Capitalism":

I love the Onassis quote in the middle, because I very much agree with it: If women did not exist-all the money in the world would have no meaning.

Pictures of the place in bygone era’s:

And its specialty-Slaw dogs and Slaw burgers. The Cole slaw is very well ground and a semi sweet concoction made with mayonnaise and mustard. We passed on the burger and had hot dogs:

Does not look like much-but it tastes good. And my lunch- a chili dog- was most definitely not heart healthy:

Good for the soul-if not the body.

Fine dining? Its not. But it had three virtues that we both liked: cheap, quick, and tasty. Beat the heck out of fast food up the road-but that’s just my view. Your mileage may vary.

Dig the menu from 1960:

Prices have gone up just a tad since then.

And we did not win the Power Ball jackpot-so I think we have to go back.

  1. I go out of my way to find places like that when driving cross country with no timeline to obey. Make it a point to find places like you visited, sometimes you strike gold, sometimes you hit a cowpie, but gold more often than not.

What used to strike me in places like that is “what the hell are these people doing here, theres nothing to do in this town, why don’t they move away”. Then I realize that they may have it solved, they got off the fast lane and are just “cruizin'”

    take care

  2. Not exactly Primanti Bros., even if the slaw is on the sandwich. Probably better than Primanti’s, actually.

  3. threadjack. Skippy how about your take on the Japan election and the result. Impact you think on their economy/social programs and relations vis a vis US.
