Far East Cynic

She may be picking up some bad habits…….

The S.O. that is. In a sign she may have been in the United States too long,  the S.O.,  who could never cuss in English as little as 8 months ago, has now become fond of using the term  “F**king Mexicans” to describe the construction workers on the lot across the street. At this rate she will be a loyal Lou Dobbs viewer very soon,  I fear.

It all started when they were finishing the construction of the house next to ours so that the new neighbors could move in. She caught one of those same “f**king Mexicans” ( although they could be from Central America for all I know…). Using our outdoor water faucet, on the side of the house, to wash their hands.  She went ballistic. ( With good reason too IMHO-I don’t want strangers on my property-and besides, the construction workers can access all the water they need on the job site). I called the Contractor’s supervising manager and voiced my displeasure. They agreed and told me that they would directly address the issue that day with foreman. And they did-I saw him out there talking directly with them.

Hopefully this will be OBE as our neighbors are now moved in-but the first time she used the term in front of my father, well it sure got my attention.

Ay Carumba!

  1. Don’t the Japanese commonly refer to Koreans as ‘Garlic eaters”?
Oddly enough the older I get the more bigoted I become.
Perhaps I should be living in Idaho.

  2. I’ll ask the S.O.

However she is starting to get past her hatred of all things Korean-especially since our neighbor’s wife is Korean and has been very nice to her. Something like Stockholm syndrome I’m sure……….

  3. My friends mother grew up in the midwest and raised as a devout Christian and imparted to her children a hatred/distrust for the Jews.
She also was a regular at her local church.
When she fell ill, the ONLY person that took care of her and called on her, you guessed it, was a Jew!!!!
My friend, who is a Buddhist thought this was amusing. So do I….

  4. Often wondered about the seemingly congenital antipathy the Japanese seem to hold for the Koreans and, seems to be, the feeling is mutual as from my reading the Japanese descended from the Koreans.

Ant thoughts as the the origins?

  5. My two cents: Because the Japanese controlled Korea, as well as other SE asian countries and parts of China, they developed a disdain for those folks.
    Bushido/Shintoism. Think master-slave.
In Korea the Japanese did their best to erase Korea’s ‘Koreaness” by forbidding the Koreans to speak Korean etc etc. it was cultural genocide.
Japanese of Korean heritage have been fighting for a long time against
    discrimination in Japan.
This, of course, is the Korean perspective.
Not unlike the descendants of tanners, the Burakamin, the Koreans still face societal hurdles in Japan.
Please ask the SO if Japanese STILL have a problem in marrying a Burakamin descendant? AS I understand it these folks can be identified by their surnames?

  6. Dude, IMHO I wouldn’t worry too much about the F bomb and the snub towards our little brown brothers from down south. I would watch for your SO beginning to crave twinkies and taking every opportunity she has to watch Opra. When that happens ship her back to Nippon – that’s the worst habit of all she could pick up, becoming like American women. YIKES!

  7. The day she starts watching Opra-she’s on a plane the next day. Or I am………….

Come to think of it, I’ll take option two.
