For two sinful indulgences in Hong Kong:
Krispy Kreme doughnuts in Hong Kong is shutting down. The HK franchise was owned and operated by the same group that runs Pepperoni’s, Jaspa’s, Cru, Wagyu, etc. They’ll probably continue through the end of this week and then that’s it. But as many who frequent their shops have noted, every time I went in, they were never busy. I think it just never took off in HK.
That Krispy Kreme was right down the street from McSorley’s-my favorite place to eat a two beer lunch in Hong Kong. Sigh.
And as for the other sinful indulgence? Well that’s probably a closure for the best. The real question is whether the other “retail outlets” can handle their “inventory”.
I just left Hong Kong for what might have been my last time…at least while in the Navy. I’m not big on Krispy Kreme, but I’m sad to hear that Fenwick’s will be going away. One question though, is it the bar area up top, or both the bar area and “Fenwick: The Dock” club downstairs? The first day we were in, both places were open. Yet on the remaining days, the upstairs bar was closed and there were “For Let” signs all over the bar area. Downstairs was still going strong and packed as usual.
It’d be a shame to kill it. Where else are you supposed to take the nice ladies you’ve met in Neptunes, so you feel some kind of normalcy? I guess Neptunes will just grow to be a bigger fire code violation. One of the comments on the linked blog said they’ll be moving to a space above Bulldogs, so that’s not too bad I guess. I hope this isn’t the beginning of the end of what’s left of the famous Wan Chai district…from the Sailor’s perspective.
Bulldogs is a new bar itself. They have a dim view of the sort of “talent” Fenwick’s attracted. If they can get a lease in the same building as Bulldogs + Joe Bananas….
A new 4 floors may be born.
Take the girls from Neptunes to The Bridge and drink and close the deal in peace.
