Far East Cynic

Flat Lining

Greetings from Mike Pence’s hometown, Columbus Indiana. It’s been over 30 years since I was last in Indiana.

It’s clear I have not really missed anything. I was here in 1986 in Indianapolis for the Indianapolis Air Show. Had a very entertaining evening afterward at the Adams Mark Hotel.

It’s 32 years later and I am older and wiser, lacking the stamina I had at the age of 29. Sigh.

It has been interesting to see the gentrification of its little towns, however. The town of Columbus having long ago gotten rid of it’s least distinguished citizen, appears to have become downright stylish.

The town had a lot of nice restaurants and surprisingly it had an Indian festival going on the day I visited it.  Lots of women wearing Sari’s. You don’t think of Indiana as a place for that kind of thing, but they were there in force. The city has built a convention center here-and the hotel chains to support it.

The state is flat. It was fascinating to watch it from the window of the airplane as we arrived. Lots of wind farms to the west of Indianapolis, which makes sense.

Came across this little shop.

Could also be an allegory for a more than few politicians.

But they still seem to roll up the sidewalks about 10 pm, leaving little to do but binge on Netflix and count down the days to the opening of Season 3 of the Man in the High Castle.

Work wise, the week has been interesting and I got to see a lot of new technology made by some off the beaten path companies.  Interestingly, none of them made their products in Indiana.

Also near Columbus is a huge outlet mall. I thought about buying some new Nike’s, just to piss off the commenting class, but decided my old shoes are fine. So I bought Nike stock instead.

One more day of work and then off to the Burgh. 4 days in corn country is more than enough.
