Far East Cynic

Will Smith said it.

There is a huge hurricane bearing down on the east coast of the United States. And from President Asterisk ( as in *not elected by the majority of the voters), provided us with these words of comfort:

Un-fucking believable.

Oh really? So riddle me this your orangeness, so how come your own FEMA Director said the response to Hurricane Maria was lacking?   Or perhaps you would like to explain how come your own government says the high number was correct?

Maybe you would like to answer Alexandra Petri on this issue?

Three thousand people did not die in Puerto Rico. This is a great relief.

The 70 year-old woman who could not get medical care or keep her insulin cold in an apartment without power — she did not die.

The old man in a hospital where there was no power to give him dialysis for four days after the storm hit — he did not die.

The mother whom the ambulance, facing spotty cell reception and congested roads, could not reach until far too late — she did not die.

Thousands did not die months after the hurricane hit, as the recovery stalled, as the island still struggled with contaminated water and unreliable power, with blocked roads and long doctors’ lines. These are just statistics, concocted for political reasons. Three thousand people did not die.

The empty shoes that lined up in front of the capitol in San Juan belong to people who are still among us. They did not die; they will come and step back into their shoes. They will walk back up functional roads and sit in their houses where the electricity is working. They will laugh with relief that this was not a real disaster, nothing like Katrina. They will fill glasses with water that is safe to drink. They will live on an island where the recovery has been progressing with alacrity and competence.

Trump has no bottom. There’s no “He can’t sink that low.” Every time you think that, he just does something even more depraved. I warned you he was a worthless soul before the election.

Take it away Mr. Smith:

  1. “especially since it is an enabler of political apartheid.”

Translation: I have no idea why the founders established it, and don’t care because it doesn’t give me what I want.”

Skippysan, you haven’t changed a bit. The same old guy that used to insult the commentariat at Lex’s place.

    1. Well now it’s 2020 and the uselessness of the Electoral College has been proven once again. The President Elect has been elected by almost 6million more votes than the incumbent and yet people will still refer to it as a “close election” because of the margins in a handful of states. We elect no other major office in the United States this way. If it didn’t exist, no one today would consider creating it.

  2. I know exactly why the founders established it in 1787. It’s 2018 now. The world has changed and the Electoral College no longer has a purpose. That’s not an insult-it is simply a statement of fact. Most polls show that the majority of the people want the EC abolished-and there are a lot of good reasons why.

As for changing, I am who I am. And if changing means becoming like the “commentariat”, I want no part of it. They were wrong then and they are probably wrong now. I have to advocate for the things I believe because I know they are right. The simple fact is that there is far more misery in America than there needs to be. And it doesn’t have to be that way.

If wanting to make life in a market economy less nasty, brutish and short is insulting, so be it.
