Nothing to see here folks, move along. Don't ask yourself the obvious question of , "would a man have been allowed to serve beyond a DOPMA limits in grade?" Of course not.
Vice Adm. Michelle Howard was nominated for reappointment to the rank of vice admiral today by President Obama, a move that allows three-star officers to serve longer than 38 years without being promoted.
But if you disagree about her qualifications, well, go back and look here for the results.
Time check. She graduated USNA in 1982. Still plenty of time for her to be CNO without messing with DOPMA mandates.* Ha! man dates….
Good point. I quoted the by-line directly from Navy Times, so they have something wrong.
She was an instructor at SWOS Steam EOOW when I was an Ensign at SWOSDOC. She was a nice person and not overbearing and had her stuff together back then. What concerns me more is that there are some who are Flags (and some who are not), and shouldn't be allowed to continue on and yet they still get to keep going on and on. That's the real problem with the Navy in my view.
I got to observe her when I was at Atsugi and again when I was traveling to and from Bahrain. (several times-both before and after I left the Navy). I was less than thrilled-and not as impressed as the powers that be are with her. She seemed, to me, to be very centered on promoting her own agenda-to the exclusion of what was good for the Sailors working for her. YMMV.
