The S.O. talked with her mother last night. All is well-but the china stock in her mom’s house is down a bit. A fair amount of things came flying off the shelves. She was all right but shocked by the earthquake. Many dishes were broken, furniture damaged, and she thought the house would be collapse- but it was ok. She is going to be busy cleaning up the mess for a while. We are making it a point to communicate once a day to member of her family.

It’s good to know that the S.O. was able to speak with her Mother…but my heart goes out to them being so far away from each other at such a time.
With the aftershocks continuing at such impossibly high Richter levels appears, this looks to be bad for quite a long time to come.
Thank you for providing the links to Japanese media coverage. Even with a language barrier, the quality of their media is very evident.
My heart goes out to you & your wife. I sat helpless in Singapore while Christchurch in NZ was hit – always hard to see a place you have lived in get flatten. This one in Tokyo is personal as well, as my company has offices / subsea cable stations in Japan. Was talking to a friend of mine in Tokyo – well yahoo – as he was walking to pick up his children – the after shocks were occurring as we talked.
Normally one feels a little disconnected to these sort of natural disasters – but not this time.
Skippy,
There has been a run on bottled water at the commissary and exchange in Yokosuka. There are long lines at the gas stations out in town with customers filling up, and on base, there is a 10 gallon limit per purchase due to thier shipment not arriving.
Many MLC employees didn’t show up today, since the JR lines are not running. Not sure if the base will loose power, but the schools in Ikego and Negishi will open at 1000 vice the regular time.
Glad SO family not hurt. Devastation appears enormous but imagine had happened here. Cannot imagine.
This seems to be a pretty good description of what’s happening at Fukushima: http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/fukushima-simple-explanation/
