The Straits Times this morning had a article that that was suprsing to say the least. Opening with the leader :60 and a class act.
The article then goes on to become a puff piece for the PRC and praises its evolution since 1949.
What is particularly troubling is what appears to me to be the rehabilitation of Mao Tse Tung-instead of telling the truth, namely that he and his commie cronies set China back almost a half century, they are portraying him as a heroic leader. There is nothing heroic about him-ever. He was just an opportunist who got lucky.
Now I do understand that when it comes to things Chinese-the Straits Times can hardly be consider objective-but still. They owe their readership better analysis than this.
They do have nice pictures of the ceremony though. Won't see a unit like this in the US military:
What’s not to understand?
When Americans ask Singaporeans if their country is part of China, they are only expressing the hopes and dreams of the ruling PAP party.
you can link to the video of the above via Marmont.
I love Singapore as much as the next aspiring expat, but the fact is it’s a Chinese country.
We are KIDDING ourselves if we think S’pore will do anything to support U.S. forces in the event of conflct in the SOT or elsewhere with PRC. They will deny port access, complicate logistics efforts, and generally sit on the fence until the victor is known and then fall squarely on the side of the victor.
Singapore is all about 1) survival and 2) maintaining approx. 75% Chinese ethnicity.
You’ll get no disagreement from me. However, Mao Ts Tung is not a part of that equation for or against the Chinese side.
Anyway, you forget, the Strait Times is PAP mouth piece lah — never a critical word out of it.
Singapore is smart – it maintain a piece both ways — good relations with Taiwan and China :-).
PS – not all the girls in the photo are “China” Chinese / based in China – there wasn’t enough – so they were “importing” them from Singapore as well. Seen pictures of the girls’s Singapore ID Cards 🙂
Dave,
Oh I know that the Straits times is a PAP mouth piece. But the thing I find ironic is that the little bastards try to pretend they are on the same level as any other paper in terms of accurately reporting the news, They don’t. All they really want to do is sell apartments.
1.3 Billion people and you cannot find 100 good looking women? There’s a commentary for you………
….. and bust enhancement creams, whitening creams and weight loss programmes .. its just as bad on the “government tv” (Media Corp) as well.
Still, there are worse places to live & work 🙂
Yes-like Shopping Mall USA. Got any ideas on getting a job over there?
Not really – alas. I ended up in Singapore as a result of a company need – still working for the same company, even though we have had another 4 names changes since. Most of the “ex-pats” I know have ended up here as a result of a transfer.
Always lots of work for ‘domestics” though 🙂 (man, isn’t that a system that sucks).
PS – Aljunied ain’t all that bad, just depends what side of the MRT you exit on 🙂
