Big White Guy is back in Canada. He verbalizes what I have been feeling for the past 4 months:
This may sound strange, but seeing so many Caucasian people all in one place feels a little odd.
In other words, I’ve grown used to being the visible minority; I’m comfortable encountering 98 Chinese faces for every 100 people.
I wonder if Hong Kong immigrants to Canada feel like a fish out of water when they return to the Big Lychee for a visit.
I had a similar experience when I moved after teaching (and shopping) in a part of Phoenix that was almost entirely Hispanic. It was so odd to look around and see a majority of white faces, or to not constantly hear Spanish spoken. I will feel weird, like I stood out or something, then I’d remember: Oh, yeah. I’m white! LOL!
I had an odd twist on the above during my year working in Silicon Valley. Being of Asian descent, I was bemused at being referred to as the “loud American.”
BTW, I love that Tamaki-nee banner.
