The Station Cat

We were gone down south today driving down well past the lake and the towns below it. Just got back a little while ago.

And when I sat down and surfed I discovered that the Wakayama station master cat-Tama-chan-got a raise of sorts. From Japan Probe:

The Wakayama Electric Railway has given a special summer bonus to Tama, a cat that serves as stationmaster of Kishi Station on the Kishigawa Line. The bonus consists of a cooling pad and a custom-made mesh hat to replace the heaver stationmaster hat Tama usually wears.

He is something of a tourist attraction as this previous post on Japan Probe notes.

Reason 433 why I miss Japan.

  1. I have been following Tama’s relentless strides up the corporate ladder. That gal came from nowhere as a stray and is now holding one of the top management positions at the Wakayama stations – and guess what? She loves loves the compensation package attention, funny hat, uniform, camera flashes, autograph hounds and all. Shows what a little ambition and good PR can do. I saw hip hop sensation Rihanna wearing a hat similar to Tama’s hat recently. Isn’t that something?
Like PETA I would be concerned about Tama but I have a feeling that Tama would meow us to kiss her furry butt.
