The idea of buying a Mac that is.
Came home after a hard day of dragging the S.O. from store to store to buy all of the stupid stuff things she wants to get for domestic life, and found that I could not log into MY side of the new computer. ( I set the machine up with me as an adminstrator and the S.O. as a mere user-it will be a cold day in Hades before she gets adminstrator rights on any machine my stuff goes into…). Direct from the mouth of Satan Bill Gates came the following words: “The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.”
WTF?
Thankfully, thanks to Google I discovered I am not the only person who has experienced this failure of Mr Gate’s wonderful contraption. The cure however was not so simple and I must express my deep thanks to all the contributers here, who carefully gave me the solution. Which was nonetheless more than a little disconcerting because it involves editing the Windows registry-which I know enough about windows to know is a dangerous undertaking if you do not know what you are doing.
Thankfully I was able to boot in Safe mode and rename my profile-delete the offending temporary profile and fix the S.O.’s as well.
Porn National Geographic pictures probably look better on a Mac any way…………..
and if you buy parallels you can still run windows on the mac for those times you absolutely have to.
Oh yeah, I’m pretty sure you qualify for the Federal employee discount from Apple. Just flash your ID at an apple store or go here http://www.apple.com/r/store/government/ The discount will generally cover the sales tax, but amazon may be cheaper, so shop around.
“it will be a cold day in Hades before she gets adminstrator rights on any machine my stuff goes into…”
Reminds me of a discussion a couple of my computer engineering nerd friends were having about when, if ever, their (future) significant other would gain their root password. They reached the conclusion that it would be after several years of marriage, if ever.
We don’t even have any joint checking accounts. Hers is hers and mine is mine-its a good system that I should have adopted years ago.
Skippy:
Apple store up here considers retired military as active duty for applying military discount, so check that out. I ran the numbers for both that and educational discount and the latter was marginally better (plus free shipping) for me so I went with that. The free iPod Touch was nice too 🙂 Working the old and new side-by-side this w/end as we transferred files and other stuff highlighhted the differences between the Mac and Vista environment even more – doubly so when the Vista machine had to be re-booted twice as it froze up when the AV s/ware went stupid…

I’ve been a Mac guy since before it was trendy. I converted my SO last year after her computer got whacked in an electrical storm. She was completely against it and was convinced she’d return the Mac within a week. Three days after we bought it, she had managed to port everything over, gotten everything configured her way, and she has never looked back. I offered to put parallels on it for her, and now, she doesn’t even want that.
As SJS said, the education discount is better than the military one, but only by a little. They are not stackable, either. And being in flight school doesn’t qualify you for the educational discount. But being a swimming instructor at the base pool? Oh yes.
One final avenue: the NEX at Oceana has Macs. A month ago I got $500 off a Macbook Pro because it was a floor model.
