Far East Cynic

I’m starting to notice a trend

Greetings from Sunny Istanbul! My furlough appears delayed, at least for the present-so I am on the road again, enjoying free beer and food in the massively awesome Turkish Airlines lounge here in Istanbul’s Airport. Heading back to the land of milk and honey-for not so sweet dealings.

Last year when the S.O. and I were here, the big movie sensation was 1453. This year its Canakkale. Same basic theme-just a different century. Turks beating the snot out of Westerners.

I wonder what’s behind all this outpouring of Turkish patriotic fervor.

Anyway-here is the trailer:

For those not familiar, this movie is about the Battle for Gallipoli. Suffice it to say the British Empire comes out on the short end of the stick.

  1. Skippy,
Enjoy the trip. As for your return back to the USA some day, maybe you should move to FL. I know you have harped on the “ex” and the USFPA, but the FL state government passed a law and it is waiting for the Gov. to sign that would end life-long alimony payments, and allow judges to change existing deals. The legislation would generally bar payments from lasting more than half the duration of a marriage and impose benefit caps based on salary. The bill also would allow courts to adjust some existing alimony deals and require judges to give divorced parents, under most circumstances, equal child custody.

MA has a similar law, and 20 other states are considering similar laws. The MA law included two major changes: Those receiving alimony can no longer tap into the paychecks of their ex-spouse’s new husband or wife and payments are now limited based on the length of marriage. Shorter marriages essentially result in fewer payments and alimony ends at retirement age for marriages lasting more than 20 years.

I guess with all of the retirees living in FL, this was bound to happen. Not that I am suggesting anything, but I bet once many of the military wives hear about this being passed, you will probably see final assignments before retirement to FL drop down or increase if one partner is shrewd enough to swing it. I am sure that if it does get signed all of the “spouse support sites” will advise against changing your state of legal residence to FL for the no state income tax, but to be aware of the divorce lawyer.

  2. Maurice-the problem will be that Nevada retains the jurisdiction for any subsequent litigation. So unless Nevada passes such a law. it doesn’t help me much.

  3. Skippy,

Sorry to hear about that. I thought that if you filed in one state it would be accepted by another.  I thought that was the reason behind the whole gay marriage issue.  So what you are telling me is that not all marriages are equal under the eyes of the law in all 50 states.  I guess that should be the standpoint on the DOMA, if it is recognized by all 50, then divorce should be recognized by all 50 and no one state's laws would dictate, unless both parties were residents of that state.

Reading the comments on the article, one poster was stating that the whole thing started when a woman and her "life partner" who was a male had a big celebration of their commitment to each other in Maui, all paid for by the alimony of her ex-husband.  Sometimes people posting things on FB and other social media is not a good thing.  I guess the ex had a few tricks up his sleeve and knew a few people who could help get the ball rolling in te FL legislature.  I have seen as I am sure you have so many similar cases of former military wives doing the same thing to some guys retirement with their new partner.  So much for equal rights.

  4. It might be-but I have been told by attornies that unless I lose my job or suffer a precipitous drop in income from what I made on active duty-she can fight back by saying I am trying to defraud her. Now it is probably worth checking with an attorney in another state-but I think the first thing my ex would do is file for a change of venue. That's what she did when I filed in Reno where they have mediation. She moved it to a county that does not. Since she had the kids that was where it was fought.

  5. The USFSPA is an abomination-but will a Congressman from either party go on the record to change it? Not a chance-especially since the Supreme Court refused to hear the case a few years back.
