Tokyo trip-part II

Published by under Japan Living

Our trip to Tokyo was not just seeing the Emperor and spending money I don’t have. We also went to the Meji Shrine to say our New Years intentions. Believe me, this year among all others- I need that!

After a nice little sleep in and a big breakfast at my behest, we set off for Harajuku and the Meji shrine. On the way, I was reminded of the biggest difference between me and the S.O. How we approach train travel, in Japan-is 180 degrees apart. Me, I would have taken the Hibiya line to Ebisu then changed to JR and gotten up to Harajuku rather quickly. However because you have to change between the Tokyo Metro and the JR line, it costs more, specifically 180 yen more. Now to the S.O.’s way of thinking, that is unacceptable. Even if it does save about 15 minutes of transit time and either way we still have to change to another train.  I’ve yet to be able to convince her that time has a value unto itself.

SO…….. we rode the Hibiya line, IN THE OPPOSITE direction of the way we need to go, to Kasumigaseki ( the site of the Um cyanide gassing by the way), where we changed to the Chiyoda line so we could ride to YoYogi Koen.  Which is one enormous dog leg. Check the map if you don’t believe me.  Fortunately, I had my Halberstam book in my backpack to read.

When we arrived at the entrance, which is right across the Harajuku bridge ( the one where the Goth girls hang out on Sundays) we were greeted by some Western Christian evangelists, with the reassuring news that we were all going to hell for entering the shrine:

The signs say in Japanese (from left to right):

After death, meet judgement.
Eternal life through Christ.
Christ’s blood purifies sin.

So we got that going for us. Lets go inside!

More proof……

Why the 19th amendment to the Constitution should be repealed.

Exit poll data indicated that independent voters broke for Obama, but they did not turn out heavily enough to counteract the high number of women voters who came out for Clinton.

“The women of NH gave this victory to Hillary Clinton,” NBC political analyst Tim Russert said

Don’t be fooled ladies. If she can fake an orgasm-she can fake tears. On to a brokered convention!

That is all.

And they have better beer too!

Free marketeers are not going to like this:

For the first time in more than 100 years, British living standards have risen above those of Americans, a report has declared.

Increasing incomes, longer holidays and “free” healthcare have all contributed to making Britons better off than our friends across the Atlantic, according to the respected Oxford Economics consultancy.

The feel-rich factor is calculated using the gross domestic product (GDP) per citizen – an indicator of average incomes – which in Britain will be £23,500 this year, compared with £23,250 in America, it predicts.

And I won’t even talk about having trains that work!

Robin Hood……..

Published by under Why I hate Dr Chu

That should be George W. Bush’s other name-only this guy works in reverse. He steals from the troops and helps the rich.

One of the little noticed news stories at the end of the calendar year was GWB’s pocket veto of the Defense Authorization bill.   By execising the pocket veto, it meant that the scheduled 3.5% pay raise for service personnel died with the bill. It also meant that the DOD had no authority to pay bonuses after January 1.

Which created the interesting situation where Federal Civilian employees got a 3.5% raise, but serving military personnel did not. That is because civilian personnel raises were tied into an Omnibus spending bill that was signed by the President on 26 December.

Bush’s objection concerns a little known provision that would reshape Iraq’s immunity to lawsuits, exposing the new government to litigation in U.S. courts stemming from treatment of Americans in Iraq during Saddam’s reign. Even cases that had once been rejected could be refiled.

Funny,  he has no objection to serving veterans getting hung with law suits from ex-wives stealing retirement pay-but he’s all up in arms about whether the Iraqis should have to fork over some of their money. Furthermore the way they explained away the lack of the full pay raise THAT BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS approved is simply pathetic:

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said the administration will work with Congress to get the additional pay raise approved and retroactive to Jan. 1 under a reworked bill. He said the bulk of the raise for the troops — 3 percent — is slated to go into effect anyway.

Sounds like a reasonable explanation doesn’t it?  Except its not true.

The President released an executive order that authorized a 3.0 % pay raise to be paid. He could have very well authorized the full 3.5% in the executive order and allowed Congress to call him on it-since the raise was in the bill that went to his desk. However, what that ignores is the fact that Bush never wanted a pay raise for service men and women anyway in this budget.  His original budget draft had no pay raise in it and one was only added after it became clear that Congress wanted a pay raise for service personnel. After which the 3.0%  pay raise was submitted. My favorite barking hound, Dr Chu repeatedly testified that the percentage was more than enough if not too much of a pay raise. Congress recognized that to be the lie it was and passed an additional 0.5% raise. ( Which is still about 3% short of what it really should be…..). In fact he made it clear from the start he and his boss opposed doing the right thing about pay and  benefits from the start.  “Bush budget officials said the administration ‘strongly opposes’ both the 3.5 percent raise for 2008 and the follow-on increases, calling extra pay increases ‘unnecessary.”

The White House’s policy statement opposed several other Congressional provisions as well, including a death gratuity for civilians who die in support of military operations and benefits for disabled retirees and their survivors.

Can’t afford it? When the country is spending 195 million a day on the war in Iraq?  Hell that’s barely two days spending for the safety of Arabs.  Trust me, the US can afford it.

However its typical of the way the administration approaches pay and benefit issues. They say all the right things and then when the rubber meets the road-they do exactly the opposite. I’ll bet somewhere, somehow there is an e-mail somewhere from one of Chu’s staffers recommending that the 0.5% be ignored by the President. Can’t prove that to be sure-but it is the kind of thing that they have had no problem doing before.

So tell me again-who supports the troops?

Or Skippy meets the Emperor.

Not really meet-more like shuffle with the herd of 80,000 Nihonjin to stand in front of the palace and wave a flag. Probably if I were to actually meet the Emperor, diplomatic relations between the US and Japan would be set back 80 years.

Anyway. The day after new years is the day that the Emperor gives his New Years greetings to the Japanese people. It is one of only two days in the year that grounds of the Imperial Palace is open to the public. As a part of our sojourn into Tokyo, the S.O. and decided to go see it-she’s never done it and since I don’t know where I will be next year, I figured I better not put it off any longer.

Follow me to see the palace!

My one and only comment on the Iowa caucuses……

Published by under Dumb Democrats,Politics

What the hell is a caucus anyway?

You’re always winning-when Hillary is losing.

Hillary=loser.

Its got a certain ring to it, don’t you think?

But my real question is:  who is Bill getting to “console”  him this evening on his wife’s loss…………….    Hide your interns!

UPDATE!  If you want to read a really good analysis of last nights events in Iowa-go read the Canadian Skippy!

If tonight repeats itself in New Hampshire next Tuesday – and I fully expect it to – Hillary is finished. Without New Hampshire, Clinton won’t even carry New York or the 22 other states that she’s from. I don’t care what the numbers are now, New Yorkers and Californians will never support a proven loser. If you’re interested in how that works, take a good look at Rudy Giuliani’s national numbers. Rudy, by the way, lost to Ron fucking Paul by six points tonight…….

I loved the first President Bush will all of my heart and I still do. I think that he’s a fantastic man and I highly underrated president, who history will treat well. His son decided early on to demonstrate just how different he is from the old man. Well, he did just that, and hopefully it’ll kill the idea of a hereditary presidency for as long as the failed Adams restoration did in the 19th century.

You didn’t get 41 by voting for 43 and you won’t get Bill by voting for Hillary. Not only does she not have his experience, she doesn’t have anything close to his political skill. Furthermore, while she lies every bit as much as her husband, she doesn’t do it with the joy that he does.

Read the rest here.
